Minerva Cover Image Competition

We’re looking for eye-catching images to feature on the covers of our issues. In addition to their image featuring on the cover of the Minerva journal issue, each winner will also receive their image featured in ‘Minerva Images of the Issue'.

Helpful tips when preparing your entry
  • Your image should be relevant to the subject area of the journal submitted to — a good angle is always appreciated.

  • Bold but simple colour combinations tend to work best — as we use a different colour scheme for our covers each month, this helps us adjust the colour palette of your issue throughout the publications.

  • And of course, as the winning image will be showcased on our journal covers for the quarter, we like it to be aesthetically pleasing

How to enter
  • Your image should be relevant to the subject area of the journal submitted to.

  • All images must be high resolution (at least 300dpi, 21x17cm), never have been published nor intended for publication elsewhere, and must be the property of the person who submits them.

  • If the image file size is too large to transmit, please create a lower-resolution version for the initial submission.

  • To enter the competition please email your image to the relevant journal 20 days before the issue publication.

Terms and Conditions

Please read these terms and conditions carefully. By entering into this Minerva Call for Covers photo competition (“Promotion”), you agree that you have read these terms and that you agree to them. Failure to comply with these terms and conditions may result in your disqualification from the Promotion.

  • Information about how to enter and award details form part of these Terms and Conditions. Entry into this Promotion is deemed to be an acceptance of these Terms and Conditions.

  • This Promotion is run by Minerva, a project of Girls in STEM (“Promoter”).

  • To enter this Promotion you must be: (a) resident in a country where it is lawful for you to enter; and (b) aged 18 years old or over (or the applicable age of majority in your country if higher) at the time of entry. This Promotion is void in Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, Russia, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria or where otherwise prohibited or restricted by law.

  • This Promotion is not open to directors or team members (or members of their immediate families) of Promoter or any affiliate of Promoter. Promoter reserves the right to verify the eligibility of entrants.

  • You can enter this Promotion by emailing your image to the journal and submit your entry to gis.minerva@gmail.com

  • A maximum of 10 entries per person is permitted. Entries must be: (a) in high resolution (minimum 300dpi, 21x17cm); and (b) unpublished and not intended for publication elsewhere. If the image file size is too large to transmit, please create a lower-resolution version for the initial submission in one of the allowable formats – PDF (for line drawings), PNG, TIFF, JPEG.

  • Promoter accepts no responsibility for any entries that are incomplete, illegible, corrupted, or fail to reach Promoter by the closing date for any reason. Proof of posting or sending is not proof of receipt. Entries via agents or third parties are invalid. No other form of entry is permitted. Please keep a copy of your entry as we will be unable to return entries or provide copies.

  • The award for the Promotion consists of the following: Each winner will have their winning entry appear as the cover image for the applicable Minerva journal.

  • The winning entries will be chosen by a panel of Girls in STEM employees, who will be looking for images that are relevant to the subject area of the journal submitted to reflect originality, image quality, creativity, composition, and visual appeal. Minerva and Girls in STEM reserves full editorial discretion in choosing winner(s), and may decide to award none of the entries.

  • The prizes shall be awarded as follows: The prize will be decided within two weeks following the close of the Promotion. The winner(s) will be notified via email. Winner(s) will be selected by a panel of the Girls in STEM team. Full names of the judging panel will be available on request. Any decision will be final and binding and no further communication will be entered into in relation to it.

  • The entry may also be used for marketing and promotional material (including without limitation on third-party social media sites). We will be entitled to make minor modifications to the entry for the purposes of resizing or reformatting the entry. Where the entry is used on the front cover of any of our publications, all intellectual property rights in the compilation of such cover, including the image but only as part of the compilation, shall be vested solely in us and you are not entitled to make or authorise any other person to make any use of such front cover compilation without our prior written consent.

  • You confirm that your entry is your own original work, is not defamatory, and does not infringe any laws, including privacy laws, whether of your country or elsewhere, or any rights of any third party, that no other person was involved in the creation of your entry, that you have the right to give Promoter and its respective licensees permission to use it for the purposes specified herein, that you have the consent of anyone who is identifiable in your contribution or the consent of their parent, guardian or carer if they are under 18 (or the applicable age of majority), it is lawful for you to enter and that you agree not to transfer files which contain viruses or any other harmful programs. Please note that it is the responsibility of the author(s) to obtain permission from the copyright holder to reproduce third-party intellectual property (including without limitation figures or tables that have previously been published elsewhere). Any identifiable person in the entry may be required to sign a model release.

  • The winner(s) of the Promotion shall be notified as follows: contacted by email no more than three weeks after the competition closes.

  • The winner(s) will be required to confirm acceptance of the prize within five working days and may be required to complete and return an eligibility form stating their age and area residency details, among other details. If a winner does not accept the award within five working days of being notified, they will forfeit their award, and Promoter reserves the right to choose another winner(s). Promoter’s decision is final and Promoter reserves the right not to correspond on any matter.

  • The name and region of residence may be used by Promoter for reasonable post-event publicity in any form including on Promoters website and social media pages at no cost.

  • Promoter reserves the right to cancel or amend these Terms and Conditions or change the Award (to one of equal or greater value) as required by the circumstances.

  • All personal data submitted by entrants is subject to and will be treated in a manner consistent with Promoter’s Privacy Policy accessible at https://www.girlsinstem.org/privacy. By participating in this Promotion, entrants hereby agree that Promoter may collect and use their personal information and acknowledge that they have read and accepted the Promoter Privacy Policy.

  • Promoter may at its sole discretion disqualify any entrant found to be tampering or interfering with the entry process or operation of the website, or to be acting in any manner deemed to be disruptive of or prejudicial to the operation or administration of the Promotion.

  • Disputes arising in connection with this Agreement shall be subject to discuss through email.
